GP & J Baker | Baker House Plain

Baker House Plain is the smoother, more lustrous plain in the House Plain & Stripe range: an even, flat weave with a slight sheen from its viscose content rather than the dry matte hand of a pure linen. With no pattern to match, it is the cloth we reach for when a scheme needs a clean, unbroken block of colour, and the extra body in the weave gives it a crisper fold than a linen plain.

The composition is 50 per cent viscose, 25 per cent linen, 15 per cent cotton and 10 per cent polyester, and it is 138 centimetres wide. GP & J Baker specify it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Six colourways: Parchment, Oatmeal, Coral, Sienna, Graphite and Charcoal, running from pale neutrals through two warm terracotta tones to two greys, so there is a workable option whether a scheme wants to stay quiet or take on some colour.

We use it for curtains and blinds where a room wants a single clean colour, and for upholstery on a chair or sofa that will sit alongside one of the house prints. Coral or Sienna bring warmth to a scheme; Graphite and Charcoal are useful where a room needs a dark, grounding note, and either reads well against pale walls and timber. Pair with Baker House Stripe in the same tone for a coordinated look. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With no repeat, quantities are simple to work out and cutting wastes little cloth. Line and interline curtains for a proper hang, particularly in Graphite or Charcoal where a heavier hand helps the colour sit well.
