GP & J Baker | Barbonne

Barbonne is one of the textured weaves in GP & J Baker's Artisan II collection, a range built around the slightly irregular, hand-worked character its name suggests. Acrylic in the blend gives the surface a soft, slightly brushed feel alongside the linen and cotton, and the 58 by 64 centimetre repeat shows as a rustic, closely woven texture rather than a figurative pattern. It is the warmest-toned design in the collection, and one of the first we reach for when a scheme wants colour without pattern.

Composition is 38 per cent acrylic, 37 per cent linen and 25 per cent cotton. It is 128 centimetres wide, with a 58 centimetre vertical and 64 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. There is one colourway, Spice, a warm burnt orange with a soft, slightly heathered look from the fibre blend.

We use Barbonne for curtains in a room that wants warmth and texture rather than pattern, a study or a farmhouse sitting room in particular, where the artisan character sits well against old timber and stone. It also makes a good blind, and a length of it stretched over a fire screen or a folding screen makes an easy, textural piece of furniture in its own right. Pair it with a plain cream or a deep green. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow one repeat per drop and match at the seams; the texture is forgiving of small variation but a stripe of misalignment will still show. Line curtains for a good fall. There is no published rub count for Barbonne, so we treat it as a curtain and blind weave rather than an upholstery cloth, and would confirm current test data with your supplier before considering it for a seat.
