Berrington is a small woven pattern in cotton and linen, built from fine repeating lines and a compact motif so that the cloth reads almost as a texture. It has a flat, matt surface and a light, crisp handle. This is the sort of supporting cloth a scheme needs: it gives a room a second pattern without asking anyone to look at it directly. There is no strong colour contrast in it, which is why it works so well as a second or third cloth.
Seventy per cent cotton with 30 per cent linen, woven 134 centimetres wide, repeating 10 centimetres vertically and 22.3 centimetres horizontally. GP & J Baker list it for curtains and bedspreads. Four colourways: Parchment, Blue, Aqua and Ochre. Parchment is the one we use most, as a near-neutral; Aqua is fresher than it appears on a small cutting; and Ochre warms a room without turning it yellow.
We use it for curtains and blinds in bedrooms and bathrooms, for bed valances and bedspreads, and for cushions that need to sit quietly beside a larger print. It also makes a good lampshade. Pair it with the Canton florals and a plain linen. It is also useful on the backs of dining chairs when the seats are in something bolder. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
The small repeat keeps quantities tidy, and one repeat per drop is enough. Match at the seams so the lines run unbroken across a wide curtain, and keep the weave square when making up, because on a small geometric a pulled line is the first thing you see. Line and interline for a proper hang on a full-length drop.
