GP & J Baker | Berwick

Berwick is a two-colourway Portobello print on a viscose-linen ground, the added viscose giving it a softer hand and a slight sheen compared with the collection's straight linen prints. The 39 by 66 centimetre repeat is a generous mid-scale, comfortable across a proper width of curtain, and having both Blue and Red available makes it one of the more adaptable prints in the range, useful across more than one room of the same house.

Composition is 50 per cent viscose, 33 per cent linen and 17 per cent polyester. It is 132 centimetres wide, with a 39 centimetre vertical and 66 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. Two colourways: Blue, calm and mid-toned, and Red, considerably warmer and more assertive.

We use Berwick for curtains in a sitting room or bedroom, choosing Blue for a quieter scheme and Red where the room can take a stronger colour. Using the two together, curtains in one and cushions in the other, is an easy way to build a room without a second pattern, and a window seat covered in a plain from either tone finishes the look without adding more print. It is also a useful print for a child's room, where either colourway reads as cheerful without being childish. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow one repeat per drop and match across widths at the 66 centimetre horizontal interval. Line and interline curtains for a good fall and to protect the print from strong sun. There is no published rub count, so keep this to curtains rather than upholstery, and order all lengths for one room from the same batch for a consistent print colour throughout.
