GP & J Baker | Bird & Iris

Bird & Iris is an archive print of birds among iris and flowering stems, drawn with a lighter, more open hand than Oriental Bird and printed on pure linen. The 65 centimetre repeat gives it a mid-to-large scale, and the linen ground lends it a softer, more matte finish than the viscose prints in the collection. In a room it reads as a fresh, garden-room print rather than a formal chinoiserie. It is the print we choose when a client wants birds but not the full chinoiserie.

The cloth is 100 per cent linen, 134 centimetres wide, with a 65 centimetre vertical and 44 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 20,000 rubs on the Martindale test and specified for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Four colourways: Blush, Indigo, Ivory/Mole and Soft Teal. Blush is the gentlest; Indigo the strongest, printed as a deep blue that suits a study; Ivory/Mole is the neutral reading; Soft Teal sits between the two.

We use it for bedroom curtains, for a loose cover on a small sofa in a garden room, and for a roman blind above a bath. It takes a plain linen or a small stripe alongside it happily. Pair it with the collection's Moreton Trellis or a plain in Soft Teal. In a bedroom it works on the headboard as well as the curtains if the walls are plain. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Linen creases and moves; have curtains interlined and allow them to hang for a few days before the final hem. For loose covers, ask your maker to allow for shrinkage at the first clean. Allow one repeat per drop. Dry clean only. For a chair, centre a bird on the inside back.
