Birds & Cherries Cotton belongs to Originals Brantwood, GP & J Baker's collection of archive botanical and natural-history prints named for Brantwood, the house on Coniston Water in the Lake District where John Ruskin lived and kept his own studies of plants, birds and landscape. This print pairs birds with a cherry branch at a neat, even scale, 34 by 34.5 centimetres, printed here on a pure cotton ground with a crisp, matte finish.
The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 138 centimetres wide, with a 34 centimetre vertical and 34.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 20,000 Martindale rubs, a figure that suits curtains and occasional-use pieces, specifying it for curtains and upholstery. Five colourways: Red/Green, Indigo, Aqua, Soft Blue and Coral; Indigo is the one we reach for most, a deep, even blue that grounds the naturalist print well.
We use it for curtains in a study or a garden room, where the archive subject earns its keep, and it covers a lightly used chair or window seat well. Pair Indigo with warm timber and brass, and Aqua or Soft Blue with a cooler, more contemporary scheme, keeping the rest of the room's fabrics plain; the same design is also available as Birds & Cherries on a softer viscose-linen ground, should you want more drape. Allow a full repeat per drop and match the print across widths so the birds and branches continue cleanly at the seams. Line curtains as standard, and interline for a south-facing window, since printed colour on cotton fades with unprotected sun; at 20,000 rubs, keep upholstered pieces to lighter, occasional use rather than a hard-working family sofa.
