GP & J Baker | Braddock

Braddock is a textured weave from the Cosmopolitan collection, a mixed-fibre cloth with a fine horizontal texture rather than a drawn pattern: the 9 centimetre horizontal repeat is closer to a subtle rib than a motif, giving the surface quiet movement without asking to be matched precisely. It is offered across four colourways rather than one, which makes it a useful cloth to specify once and place consistently across several rooms in the same house.

The cloth is 69 per cent viscose, 13 per cent cotton, 10 per cent linen and 8 per cent polyester, a blend that favours drape and a soft sheen over a crisp hand. It is 137 centimetres wide, with a 9 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 25,000 Martindale rubs, specifying it for curtains and upholstery. Four colourways: Stone, Oatmeal, Indigo and Aqua. Stone and Oatmeal are the easy neutrals; Indigo and Aqua bring in blue for a scheme that wants more colour.

We use it for curtains where a plain would be too flat, and for upholstery on chairs used often but not constantly, since 25,000 rubs is a solid mid-range figure. Pair the neutrals with a stronger print from elsewhere in the collection, and let Indigo or Aqua anchor a blue-and-neutral scheme on their own. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Because only a horizontal repeat is stated, discuss railroading with your maker, which can reduce waste on wide upholstery pieces. Line curtains as standard. For upholstery, keep Braddock to chairs and occasional seating rather than a sofa in continuous daily use, and check colour consistency across a large order, since dye lots can vary slightly between the four colourways.
