Burford Embroidery brings a stitched floral into the Portobello collection, where most of the range is printed: a botanical pattern worked in linen, polyester and viscose thread, with a horizontal repeat that runs the full width of the cloth so the design reads as one continuous drawing across a curtain rather than a series of repeats stacked side by side. It is the one design in Portobello where the pattern is built into the cloth rather than printed onto it.

Composition is 50 per cent linen, 41 per cent polyester and 9 per cent viscose. It is 126 centimetres wide, with a 77 centimetre vertical repeat and a horizontal repeat spanning the full width, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. There is one colourway, Blue.

We use Burford Embroidery for curtains in a sitting room, where the continuous horizontal pattern can be read across a full pair, and it makes a striking single-panel headboard for the same reason. A pair of cushions cut from an offcut carries the blue and the raised stitch onto a plain sofa elsewhere in the room, and it is a good choice wherever a client wants the character of Portobello but prefers stitch to print. Pair it with a plain linen in blue or a small stitched geometric. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Because the horizontal repeat is the full cloth width, ask your maker to lay out the widths before cutting so the pattern continues correctly across any seam. Allow one vertical repeat per drop. Line and interline curtains to support the stitch. It is not rated for upholstery, so keep it to windows and beds, and press from the reverse over a soft cloth.
