Caldbeck is a mid-scale archive print from Signature Prints, a small all-over design drawn with a loose, hand-cut quality and printed in two tones on pure linen. At 38 by 33 centimetres the repeat is neat enough for a chair and generous enough for a curtain, and the linen ground gives the print a soft, slightly uneven surface that suits old houses. It is the print we use when a bird design would be too much. Two-tone prints are the easiest to build a scheme around, and this is one of the best of them.
The cloth is 100 per cent linen, 132 centimetres wide, with a 38 centimetre vertical and 33 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 20,000 rubs on the Martindale test and specified for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Two colourways: Indigo/Ivory, a deep blue on cream, and Soft Blue, a paler, more relaxed reading. Indigo/Ivory is the one for a study or a boy's room; Soft Blue suits a bathroom or a coastal bedroom.
We use it on small chairs and stools, for roman blinds, and for a pair of bedroom curtains where a big bird print would be too much. It is a natural partner to Oriental Bird and Rockbird in the same collection, and it is good as cushions on a plain sofa. In a hallway it makes a good bench cushion or a window seat squab. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
For upholstery, centre the repeat and keep it square; 20,000 rubs suits occasional and bedroom seating rather than a family sofa. For curtains, line and interline, and let the linen hang before the final hem. Allow one repeat per drop. Dry clean only.
