Calthorpe is one of the embroideries in the Langdale collection, a botanical worked in raised stitch across a linen-rich ground with a generous 76 centimetre repeat. The stitch sits proud of the cloth, so the design reads as much through texture as through colour, and at this scale it wants a proper window or a bed rather than a small cushion to show what it can do.

The composition is 65 per cent linen and 35 per cent viscose, the viscose largely carrying the embroidery thread, which gives the stitch a little more sheen than a pure linen ground would. It is 128 centimetres wide, with a 76 centimetre vertical and 64 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and upholstery. There is one colourway, Aqua, a clear blue-green that reads as fresh rather than muted; it suits a room with plenty of natural light.

We would hang it as curtains in a bedroom or a garden-facing sitting room, and it is substantial enough to cover a headboard or a generous ottoman. Pair it with a plain linen in aqua for blinds and cushions, or a small stitched geometric to sit against it on a chair. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow a full 76 centimetre repeat per drop and match the stitch across widths so the embroidery continues cleanly at the seams. Line and interline curtains, since the interlining supports the raised stitch and stops it printing through in strong sun; for upholstery, ask your workroom to centre a motif on the main seat or back panel rather than letting it fall at random.
