GP & J Baker | Campden

Campden is a cotton-led weave with a broad, slightly irregular figure, 11.5 centimetres across and 6 up the cloth, so the pattern steps sideways more than it climbs. That gives it the look of an old woven coverlet rather than a designed motif. The hand is dry and a little grainy from the cotton, and there is enough weight in it to sit flat on a seat without needing much persuasion.

The blend is 53 per cent cotton, 20 per cent viscose, 16 per cent polyester, 10 per cent linen and 1 per cent polyamide, woven 138 centimetres wide and tested to 29,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, which the supplier rates for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Ochre is the colourway, a dry mustard yellow with a good deal of brown in it, which stops it turning acid in daylight.

We would use Campden on a pair of small armchairs, on a headboard, or as a Roman blind in a kitchen where the window wants some pattern and the room has none. It sits well with dark green paint, brown leather and matt black metal, and it takes a plain oatmeal linen alongside it happily. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The horizontal repeat is the awkward one here: at 11.5 centimetres you will lose cloth matching across a wide seat or a curtain join, so allow an extra repeat on every drop and half a metre overall. Centre the figure on the front of a cushion rather than the seam. For blinds, set the rod pockets so that none of them falls across the widest part of the figure.
