Canton is the design its collection takes its name from: a large printed pattern of flowering branches and foliage drawn in the manner of an early trading-house document, printed on a viscose and linen cloth. The viscose gives it a fluid drape and a faint lustre that suits the drawing, while the linen keeps the ground honest. It is a formal design handled lightly. The branches rise through the height of the repeat, so on a tall window the design has somewhere to go.
Eighty-two per cent viscose with 18 per cent linen, 137 centimetres wide, repeating 68 centimetres vertically and 45.6 centimetres horizontally. It is listed for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Four colourways: Red/Green, Red/Blue, Blue/Green and Olive. Red/Green is the most traditional reading, Olive is the quietest and the one we choose when the print must sit alongside timber or stone, and Blue/Green suits a room with a lot of daylight.
We use it for full-length interlined curtains in a drawing room, for a pair of armchairs facing a plain sofa, and for a headboard where a single branch can be centred. It also makes a generous roman blind. Pair it with plain linens, a velvet, and at most one stripe. It is the cloth to choose when a room needs one decision made confidently. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Viscose drapes well but needs support: interline the curtains, hang them for a fortnight and set the hem afterwards. Allow a full 68 centimetre repeat on every drop and match the horizontal join so the branches continue across widths. On upholstery, centre the design on the seat and the inside back before anything else is cut.
