Cardinal Stripe is a woven stripe from GP & J Baker's collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces, drawn from the Royal Gardens group of designs and woven rather than printed, so the stripe has real depth and a slightly irregular, hand-worked edge rather than a hard printed line. The name nods to the cardinal, Wolsey, whose gardens gave the wider group of designs its theme, and the stripe reads as the more formal, tailored companion to the group's larger patterns.

The cloth is 55 per cent viscose and 45 per cent cotton. It is 136 centimetres wide, with a 34 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 35,000 Martindale rubs, which is rated for upholstery. There is one colourway, Jewel, a rich mix of saturated tones across the stripe rather than a single, flat colour; it is a lively option for a room that wants some formality with real colour.

We use it for a pair of dining chairs or a window seat where the stripe can run vertically, and for curtains in a room that wants pattern with some structure. Pair it with a plain velvet in one of the stripe's darker tones, and keep other patterns in the room to a minimum so the jewel colours have room to read clearly. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Because only the horizontal repeat is stated, agree the stripe's direction with your maker before cutting, and keep it running true across a run of chairs or a pair of curtains. Line curtains as standard; for upholstery, at 35,000 rubs it will manage a dining chair or an occasional seat comfortably through regular use.
