Cecily is a loose, stemmed botanical from House Small Prints II, drawn from a GP & J Baker archive document and printed at a comfortable domestic scale. The repeat runs 18 centimetres vertically, so the sprays read clearly as plants without the wall turning into a garden. All five colourways are worked in two tones, which gives the print more depth than a single-colour sprig and lets it hold its own against panelling or a painted floor.
The ground is 100 per cent non-woven, printed 52 centimetres wide, with an 18 centimetre vertical repeat. Colourways are Indigo, Blue/Green, Red/Green, Ochre/Teal and Red/Blue. Indigo is the most restrained and reads almost as a monochrome from a distance. Blue/Green and Ochre/Teal are the easiest to build a room around. Red/Green and Red/Blue are the warm, busier pair, and we would use them in a smaller room where you want the walls to close in a little rather than recede.
We would hang Cecily in a bedroom, a dressing room or a small dining room, and it is one of the better papers in the book for a cloakroom ceiling where you want the eye to travel. Pair it with plain linen curtains in the ground colour and keep any second pattern in the room to a stripe or a check. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Paste the wall and hang each length dry, sliding it into the match rather than pushing it. Allow an extra repeat per drop for cutting, and start from the most visible corner so the inevitable pattern break lands somewhere you will not look. A four metre wall at 2.6 metres high needs eight drops, which is three rolls of the usual 10 metres. Order the whole room in one batch and keep the leftover for making good.
