Chifu Velvet renders the collection's eponymous archive botanical as a cut velvet rather than a print, the same design at a near-identical 77 by 66.5 centimetre repeat now carried through pile and ground instead of printed colour. The effect is deeper and more textured, with light catching the raised areas of the motif differently as you move past it through the day.
The cloth is 90 per cent cotton and 10 per cent polyester, a firm ground that gives the pile good structure and a slightly crisper hand than the collection's viscose-rich velvets elsewhere. It is 133 centimetres wide, with a 77 centimetre vertical and 66.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and no rub count is stated, so we would treat it as suited to curtains and occasional rather than daily-use upholstery. There is one colourway, Charcoal/Multi, a dark, multi-toned ground that reads as rich rather than heavy.
We use it for a single statement chair or a pair of cushions where the pattern and the pile can both be appreciated, and it makes handsome curtains in a room with the height for a full repeat to show properly. Pair it with a plain linen or wool in one of its underlying tones, and keep the rest of the room quiet. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Allow a full 77 centimetre repeat per drop and centre the motif on the main panel of any upholstered piece before cutting begins. Keep pile direction consistent across all sections, and have curtains steamed rather than pressed to keep the pile standing. As no rub count is given, keep it to occasional rather than daily-use seating.
