Chimney Weave is a textured weave from the Royal Weaves group, its 15 by 28 centimetre repeat giving the surface a more pronounced, almost basket-like texture than the flatter plains elsewhere in the collection. The name suggests the stacked, architectural rhythm of the weave rather than any specific motif, and it is the most heavily textured of the group's plains, closer to a real weave than a smooth ground.
The composition is 52 per cent viscose, 24 per cent cotton, 18 per cent linen and 6 per cent polyester. It is 137 centimetres wide, with a 15 centimetre vertical and 28 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 45,000 Martindale rubs, which is rated for upholstery. There is one colourway, Sapphire, the same deep blue used across several of the Royal Weaves group.
We use it for a sofa or a pair of armchairs in daily use, where 45,000 rubs gives real confidence, and for curtains where the texture can be appreciated at close range. Pair it with Palace Weave or York Weave in the same Sapphire colourway for a tonal room with varied texture, or with an archive print for contrast against its more emphatic surface and stronger self-pattern. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Match the texture across widths so the repeat sits level, particularly on a large upholstered piece where any drift is more visible. Line curtains for a good fall; for upholstery, standard construction applies, and at 45,000 rubs it is one of the more hard-wearing weaves in the whole Royal Weaves group, suited to a family sofa in genuinely heavy daily use.
