GP & J Baker | Chimneys

Chimneys is the small architectural print in Royal Court, GP & J Baker's collection drawn from the archive of designs made for royal residences. The motif is a row of moulded Tudor chimney stacks, drawn loosely and set close together on a 10 centimetre vertical repeat, so it works as an all-over. Printed on 100 per cent cotton, which gives a firm, matt surface and holds the fine line work without spread. From a distance it reads as a small two-colour figure; close up the drawing is the point.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 134 centimetres wide, with a 10 centimetre vertical and 19.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and it is rated for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Five colourways: Green, Blue, Old Red, Ochre and Aqua. Blue and Green are the steady pair. Old Red is the warmest and looks best by lamplight. Ochre sits well with oak, and Aqua is the lightest and the one we would use in a bathroom or a small bedroom.

The tight repeat makes this a useful upholstery print. We use it on a small armchair or a pair of dining seats, on cushions against a plain sofa, and as a Roman blind in a kitchen or a boot room where a large design would be wasted. It also works as a lining inside curtains cut from a plain. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Cotton this weight will shrink a little if it ever gets damp, so have curtains lined and keep the hem deep enough to let down. For upholstery, run the chimneys upright on every panel, including the outside back, and keep the horizontal repeat in mind when you are joining widths. Allow one repeat per drop for matching, which at 10 centimetres is very little waste.
