GP & J Baker | Clarendon Diamonds

Clarendon Diamonds is a small woven geometric from the Cosmopolitan collection, a tight diamond lattice jacquard-woven into a cotton and cupro ground rather than printed onto it. At 5 by 17 centimetres the repeat is close and even, so the diamonds read as a fine, all-over texture from across a room and only resolve into a clear geometric close to. It shares its name and its lattice construction with Clarendon Small Check in the Langdale collection, though the two are woven on different grounds and behave quite differently on the roll.

The cloth is 51 per cent cupro and 49 per cent cotton, the cupro giving the weave a soft sheen that a plain cotton ground would not have. It is 135 centimetres wide, with a 5 centimetre vertical and 17 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and upholstery. There is one colourway, Multi, a blend of tones across the diamond that keeps the geometric from reading as flat or graphic.

We use it for curtains where a plain would be too quiet and a floral too much, and it upholsters a chair or a footstool well, since the small scale keeps the pattern legible on a compact piece. Pair it with a plain linen or velvet in one of its component tones, or with Clarendon Small Check for a family of related textures across a scheme. It is also a good choice for a window seat cushion, where the small geometric wears well under daily use. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The small repeat wastes little cloth; allow 17 centimetres per drop for matching and keep the diamonds level across a run of curtains or chairs. Line curtains as standard, and for upholstery brief your maker to centre the lattice on the main seat and back panels so the geometric sits square rather than off-grain.
