Compton is a small-scale print from GP & J Baker's House Small Prints collection, the House's line of neat, all-over florals sized to sit quietly behind a bolder pattern elsewhere in the room, or to furnish a whole room on its own without ever feeling insistent. It is worked at a modest 36 by 17 centimetre scale on a cotton-linen ground with more body than the collection's pure viscose-linen prints, giving it a slightly crisper hand at the window and on a seat.
The cloth is 90 per cent cotton and 10 per cent linen, and it is 136 centimetres wide, with a 36 centimetre vertical and 17 centimetre horizontal repeat. GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and upholstery. Three colourways: Indigo/Red, Green/Blue and Red/Ochre; Indigo/Red is the one we reach for most, a grounded pairing that works equally well in a period room or a plainer, more contemporary one built around grey and oak.
We use it for curtains in a bedroom or sitting room that wants a quiet, all-over print, and it covers a chair or window seat well where the crisper cotton-linen ground holds its shape under daily use. Pair Green/Blue with a cool, contemporary scheme, and Red/Ochre where the room wants more warmth and depth of colour. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Allow a full repeat per drop and match the print across widths so the pattern continues cleanly at every single seam. Line curtains as standard, and interline for a south-facing window to protect the printed colour from fading; for upholstery, plan the pattern placement carefully with your workroom before the finished piece is cut.
