GP & J Baker | Court Buttons

Court Buttons is the small spot in Royal Court, GP & J Baker's collection drawn from the archive of designs made for royal residences. The motif is a little rosette, drawn like a covered button, set out on a close grid with an 18 centimetre vertical and 13.5 centimetre horizontal repeat. Printed on 100 per cent cotton, so the ground is firm and matt and the small figure stays sharp. It behaves as a texture at any distance, which is what makes a cloth like this so useful in a scheme that already has a big print in it.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 135 centimetres wide, 18 centimetre vertical repeat, 13.5 centimetre horizontal, rated for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Seven colourways: Blue/Green, Indigo, Pink/Green, Ochre, Blue, Aqua and Old Red. Indigo and Old Red are the strongest. Blue, Aqua and Blue/Green are the everyday choices. Ochre warms a cool room and Pink/Green is the gentlest, which suits a bedroom or a child's room.

We use this as the supporting fabric: cushions against a patterned sofa, the inside of a curtain pelmet, a bedroom chair, a small blind in a bathroom. It is also a good cloth for loose covers because the tight repeat means very little waste and a seam almost disappears in it. Put it with a plain and a check and it will hold a room together. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow half a metre per drop for matching and no more. On upholstery, keep the grid square to the frame, because a spot on a slight angle is more obvious than a floral would be. Cotton will shrink slightly, so pre-shrink loose covers before making up if they will be washed rather than cleaned.
