Court Buttons is the small spot in Royal Court, GP & J Baker's wallpaper collection drawn from the archive of designs made for royal residences. The motif is a rosette drawn like a covered button, set on a close grid with an 18.5 centimetre vertical repeat. At that scale it does not behave as a pattern so much as a worked surface, which is what you want from a paper that has to run through a hall and up a staircase past doors, architraves and a dado without ever becoming tiresome.
The ground is 100 per cent non-woven, printed 70 centimetres wide with an 18.5 centimetre vertical repeat, and the wider roll means fewer joints to see. Six colourways: Blue/Green, Indigo, Pink/Green, Ochre, Blue and Aqua/Red. Indigo is the deepest and the best for a room you use in the evening. Blue and Aqua/Red are the lightest. Ochre warms a cool aspect, Pink/Green is the softest, and Blue/Green is the one that sits most easily with green joinery.
This is a background paper and that is how we use it: halls, landings, box rooms, the walls above a panelled dado, and the inside of a wardrobe or a linen cupboard. It carries a bolder curtain fabric well and it will take pictures hung on it, which the tapestry designs in this collection will not. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Paste the wall and hang each length dry. Allow one 18.5 centimetre repeat per drop, which is modest waste. A four metre wall at 2.6 metres high takes six drops at this width, so two rolls if the roll runs the usual 10 metres, and three on a taller wall. Butt the joints carefully, because a regular grid shows a seam that has been pushed open more than a loose print would.
