Court Linen is a plain weave from the Royal Weaves group, more linen-forward than its stablemates and finished with a crisper, more textile hand as a result. With no repeat to match, it is a straightforward plain, and the higher linen content gives it a slightly drier, more natural surface than the viscose-rich weaves elsewhere in the collection. It reads as the most classically linen of the Royal Weaves plains, which is where its name comes from and why we reach for it first.
The composition is 52 per cent linen, 38 per cent viscose and 10 per cent nylon. It is 137 centimetres wide with no stated repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 30,000 Martindale rubs, which is rated for upholstery. Three colourways: Oyster and Parchment, both pale neutrals, and Verdigris, the soft blue-green that recurs through the Historic Royal Palaces collaboration.
We use it for a sofa or curtains where a genuinely linen-handed plain is wanted rather than a smoother viscose weave, and Verdigris pairs naturally with Wolsey or Chimney Weave from the same collaboration. Pair Oyster or Parchment with almost any archive print in the collection, using it as the calm ground a busier pattern needs to sit against in a well-balanced scheme. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
With no repeat, cutting is simple and wastage low. Line curtains for a good fall; for upholstery, standard construction applies, and at 30,000 rubs it is rated for daily use. Keep it away from water, bleach and a hot iron, as with any of these weaves, and check dye lots across a larger order before cutting.
