Cromer Paisley is a printed paisley from the Artisan II collection, its curling pine motif drawn at a fairly compact scale with a 43 by 32 centimetre repeat. The paisley form is one of the most enduring in furnishing prints, and here it keeps a hand-drawn, slightly irregular edge rather than the crisp symmetry of a machine repeat, which gives it real warmth on a linen-cotton ground.
The cloth is 70 per cent linen and 30 per cent cotton, a blend that takes the print well and gives the cloth enough body to hang or upholster. It is 128 centimetres wide, with a 43 centimetre vertical and 32 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 20,000 Martindale rubs, a figure that suits occasional rather than daily-use seating. Two colourways, Aqua and Indigo, both cool blues that work equally well against warm or neutral schemes.
We use it for curtains in a bedroom or sitting room, and it covers a small chair or a window seat well where the paisley can be appreciated at close range, on its own or as a companion to Aydon from the same collection. Pair it with a plain linen or wool in one of its two blues, and let the paisley carry the pattern in an otherwise quiet room. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Allow a full 43 centimetre repeat per drop and match the print carefully across widths, since paisley motifs show any misalignment quickly at the seam. Line curtains as standard and interline for a room with strong sun, since printed colour on linen fades faster than a woven cloth. At 20,000 rubs, keep upholstery to lightly used pieces rather than a family sofa.
