GP & J Baker | Crosby

Crosby is a two-tone print from the Caspian collection, worked on a cotton-linen ground with a distinctly horizontal emphasis: the repeat runs 68.5 centimetres across against just 32 centimetres in height, so the design reads as a series of bands rather than a conventional up-the-roll motif. It sits at the more graphic end of the Caspian collection, a print we use where a scheme wants structure rather than florals, and it reads as confidently from across a room as it does up close.

The cloth is 60 per cent cotton and 40 per cent linen, a blend with more body than a pure linen print and a slightly crisper hand that suits a print built on clean, banded lines. It is 137 centimetres wide, with a 32 centimetre vertical and 68.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and upholstery. Two colourways, Indigo and Blue/Green; Indigo is the plainer, more versatile of the two, while Blue/Green carries a little more contrast and reads as the livelier option.

We use it for curtains where the horizontal emphasis can be appreciated across a generous width, and it upholsters well on a sofa or an armchair where the graphic quality holds its own against plain neighbours rather than disappearing into them. Pair Indigo with warm timber and brass, and Blue/Green with a cooler, more contemporary palette built around grey and oak. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Because the horizontal repeat is so wide, plan the layout of each width with your maker before cutting, so the banding lines up rather than half-repeating at the seam. Line curtains as standard, and for upholstery centre the design carefully on the main panels of a chair or sofa before the rest of the cut is marked out, checking the bands sit level across the whole piece.
