Cubby is a plain woven cloth of jute and cotton, a flat and dry texture with the jute showing as fine irregular flecks through the surface. It has no pattern to place, so it does the job a plain has to do in a scheme built around Kit Kemp's prints and stripes: hold still and give the eye somewhere to rest. The hand is firm rather than soft.
The composition is 35 per cent jute and 65 per cent cotton, woven 134 centimetres wide with no repeat to allow for. It is rated at 25,000 rubs on the Martindale test, which places it in general domestic use, and the mill lists it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Twelve colourways: String, Desert, Chocolate, Tuscan, Spice, Red, Soft Red, Ocean, Blue, Indigo, Forest and Ochre. String and Desert are the naturals, while Indigo, Forest and Chocolate are the ones we use to ground a room.
We use it for loose covers and for the sofa in a room where the curtains carry the pattern, and it upholsters a headboard or an ottoman neatly because there is nothing to match. It also makes a good, slightly rustic curtain with a simple heading. Pair it with any of the Kit Kemp prints or the stripes from the same book. With no repeat the quantities are straightforward, but jute-blend cloths vary naturally between pieces, so order everything for one room in a single cut. At 25,000 rubs it suits domestic seating rather than a hard-worked family sofa. Ask your upholsterer to use a firm interlining and to keep the weave square on the deck, where a pulled line shows.
