Daisy Check is about as small as a check gets before it turns into a texture: 2 centimetres up and 1.5 across, woven rather than printed, so the two colours sit in the cloth and the surface stays matt. Across a room it is a soft tone; from a chair it is clearly a check. That makes it one of the more useful things in this collection, because it gives a scheme a bit of grain without committing it to pattern.

The composition is 47 per cent viscose, 30 per cent cotton, 18 per cent linen and 5 per cent polyester, woven 140 centimetres wide and tested to 30,000 rubs, which the supplier rates for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads alike. Olive is the colourway here, a grey-green that goes brown in low light and reads greener against white, so it is worth seeing it on the wall it will live with.

We would use it on a slipper chair, a fitted window seat, a set of kitchen chair seats, or as a Roman blind above a plain painted sill. It is a good cloth to line the inside of a curtain leading edge with, and it makes a neat cushion border. Put it with oatmeal, cream and brown rather than with another pattern. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The repeat is small enough to cost as a plain, but the check is square and the eye will find any panel cut off the grain, so cut to the weave rather than to the selvedge if the two have drifted. On seat cushions, run the check straight front to back and square it to the front rail. Piping in a plain rather than in the check itself keeps the edges clean.
