Danver Check is a medium check, 5.5 centimetres across and 4 up, woven in close tones so the grid shows as a soft shadow rather than a line. It is the size of check that works on furniture: large enough to be seen for what it is, small enough that a chair takes several repeats and does not look like a sample. The cloth has a dry, matt face from the cotton and linen, with the viscose giving it a soft fall.

Composition is 41 per cent viscose, 39 per cent cotton, 14 per cent linen and 6 per cent polyester, woven 136 centimetres wide and tested to 30,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, rated by the supplier for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Olive is the colourway, a grey-green check on a paler ground, warm enough to sit alongside brown and quiet enough to use on a large piece.

We would use Danver Check on an armchair or a small sofa, on a loose-covered ottoman, or as curtains in a garden room or a boot room. It goes with painted joinery, brown leather, oak and rush, and it sits well next to a plain in the same green or a warm oatmeal. A pair of cushions in it lifts a plain sofa. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Set the check out properly: centre it on the seat, the inside back and the front border, and match it across every seam and around the corners of a box cushion. Allow one extra repeat per drop for curtains and around a metre extra on a chair for the matching. If the check has drifted off the grain at the selvedge, cut to the check rather than to the edge.
