Denbigh is a semi-plain with a 3 centimetre horizontal movement and no vertical repeat at all, which means the cloth reads as a fine, close banding running across the width and can be used almost like a plain. The linen gives the face a dry, slightly uneven quality and the viscose keeps the drape soft, with a small amount of acrylic in the blend adding a little loft to the surface.

The composition is 44 per cent viscose, 23 per cent linen, 16 per cent cotton, 14 per cent polyester and 3 per cent acrylic, woven 137 centimetres wide and tested to 28,500 rubs on the Martindale scale, rated by the supplier for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Aqua is the colourway, a soft blue-green that behaves as a pale neutral in a room with cream walls and reads cooler against white.

We would use Denbigh for bedroom or bathroom curtains, on a small upholstered chair, or on a headboard where the banding runs quietly across the width. It sits well with cream, sand, pale oak and brushed nickel, and it will take a stronger blue or a soft red on cushions without arguing. In a hallway it makes a calm Roman blind. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With no vertical repeat, curtains cost as a plain; only the horizontal banding needs matching across a seam, and at 3 centimetres that costs very little cloth. Keep all pieces running the same way up so that the banding stays horizontal on every panel of a chair. Interline curtains for weight, and weight the hems, since this is a light cloth that will otherwise move in a draught.
