GP & J Baker | Dixter

Dixter takes its name from the great Sussex garden and is a botanical embroidery of garden flowers stitched in two colours across a linen-cotton ground. The drawing is loose and generous, with the rayon thread giving the flowers a slight sheen against the matte cloth. With a 58 centimetre repeat it sits between the small geometrics and the largest florals in the collection, which makes it one of the more adaptable designs. It is a flower embroidery with the informality of a real garden rather than a botanical plate.

The composition is 53 per cent linen, 32 per cent cotton and 15 per cent rayon, the rayon being the embroidery thread. It is 137 centimetres wide with a 58 centimetre vertical and 68.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and it is specified for curtains and bedspreads. One colourway, Coral/Blue, a warm coral and a soft blue on natural, which is a fresh pairing for a bedroom or a garden room.

We use it for curtains in a bedroom, for a bedspread, and for cushions on a blue or cream sofa where the coral can be picked up in a lamp or a rug. Pair with plain linens in either colour and Pavilion or Art Stitch on a chair. In a garden room it makes a good pair of short curtains, and a single panel behind a bed reads as a picture. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow one repeat per drop and match across widths. Line and interline curtains; the rayon thread will dull if pressed hard, so press from the reverse over a towel. It is not rated for seating. A bedspread wants a light interlining for weight so the stitching does not dimple, and a plain lining to keep it from slipping.
