Dotty is exactly what the name says: a printed spot on cotton, drawn by hand so that no two dots are quite identical and the rows carry a slight wobble. It is the plainest pattern in the House Small Prints book and probably the most useful. Where a scheme needs a second or third cloth that adds nothing but a little life, this is the one. The ground is left generous between the rows, which keeps it from reading as a texture.
One hundred per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, with a very small repeat of 9 centimetres vertically and 12 centimetres horizontally. It is listed for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Eight colourways: Blue, Aqua, Blush, Ochre, Green, Soft Green, Red/Blue and Blue/Green. Soft Green and Blush are the quietest, Red/Blue is the one with two colours in play, and Blue and Ochre are the two we specify most often.
We use it for lampshades, cushions and blinds, for the lining of a curtain where a flash of pattern is welcome, and for loose covers on small chairs. In a child's room it will happily cover the curtains and a headboard together. Pair it with a floral and a stripe without any risk of clashing. It also suits a bed valance. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
With a nine centimetre drop repeat there is almost no wastage, which makes this a sensible cloth for small items cut from one length. Match the rows at the seams, as regular spots show a misalignment immediately. On lampshades, check the horizontal repeat against the frame's circumference so the join lands between rows of dots.
