GP & J Baker | Edessa

Edessa takes its name from the ancient city on the old Silk Road, and like its East to West stablemates it is a woven texture rather than a print: a fine, even structure built from cotton, viscose and polyester that gives the cloth real substance in the hand. The repeat is smaller and busier than Therapia's, so the surface reads as a close, all-over texture rather than a slow, unfolding one, which suits a room that wants pattern without a large motif.

The composition is 50 per cent cotton, 32 per cent polyester and 18 per cent viscose, a blend chosen for durability as much as hand. It is 138 centimetres wide, with a 43 centimetre vertical and 34.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and fixed upholstery. There is one colourway, Indigo, a deep, ink-toned blue that reads as almost charcoal in shade.

We use Edessa for curtains in a study or hallway, and because it is specified for fixed upholstery it also works well on a headboard or a window seat base that will not be moved or cleaned as hard as a sofa. Pair it with a plain wool or linen in a lighter blue, or with brass and dark timber, which suit its ink tone. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

For fixed upholstery, ask your maker to railroad the cloth where the piece allows, since the horizontal repeat is small enough to run sideways without disrupting the pattern. Allow one repeat per drop for curtains and match carefully at any seam; the close repeat shows drift more readily than a larger one. There is no published rub count, so treat it as suited to pieces that stay in place rather than daily-use seating.
