GP & J Baker | Egerton

Egerton is a heavier, more structured weave than most of this collection, a 10 by 6 centimetre woven figure with real body behind it, built for seating rather than for windows. The polyester and polyamide in the blend are there for strength and you can feel it: the cloth is firm, springs back off a fold and pulls up tight over a frame without wrinkling at the corners.

It is 39 per cent viscose, 39 per cent polyester, 12 per cent cotton, 7 per cent linen and 3 per cent polyamide, woven 138 centimetres wide with a 10 centimetre vertical and 6 centimetre horizontal repeat, and tested to 28,500 rubs. The supplier rates it for loose and fixed upholstery rather than curtains and we would follow that. Four colourways, Spice, Ochre, Blue and Green, each a clear saturated tone rather than a muted one.

This is a cloth for the piece you want people to notice: a pair of dining chairs, a club chair in a corner, a banquette in a kitchen, a stool at the end of a bed. Spice and Ochre sit well against dark green walls and walnut, while Blue and Green work with oak and pale plaster. Use plains around it and let it do the work. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

On a 10 centimetre repeat, centre the figure on the seat and on the inside back separately and accept the small loss of cloth that comes with it; a pair of dining chairs takes about a metre and a half once matched. The weave is firm enough to want a sharp cut and a well-stuffed edge, so ask your upholsterer to pull it over the frame rather than stretch it, or the figure will distort along the rails.
