Eldon gives the collection its name and is its largest design, a dense drawn composition printed on viscose and linen, with a repeat that runs the full 130 centimetre width and 131 centimetres down the drop. At that size you read the whole design at once rather than a repeating unit, and a pair of curtains becomes a single piece of pattern. Designs drawn at this scale are unusual now because they are expensive to print and expensive to make up, which is part of why they still look considerable on a window.
The cloth is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen, 130 centimetres wide, with a 131 centimetre vertical and 130 centimetre horizontal repeat. Abrasion is tested at 20,000 rubs on the Martindale scale. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Three colourways: Document Red/Green, the original archive colouring; Blue/Green, the cooler alternative; and Jazz, which is the brightest and needs the plainest room.
Curtains, full length and interlined, are the first use and the best. After that a headboard and bed valance made as a set, or one large armchair in a room where everything else is plain. Keep walls flat, floors plain and every other fabric quiet. It is not a cloth for a small room. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A full-width repeat means each width stands on its own, but the 131 centimetre vertical match is long, so add a full repeat to every drop and accept the waste, which is the price of a design this size. Decide before cutting where the centre of the composition should fall on the finished curtain, and have the workroom cut all drops from one run of cloth.
