GP & J Baker | Elvaston

Elvaston is a botanical embroidery from the Langdale collection, worked in a fine, continuous stitch across a linen, viscose and cotton ground with a moderate 38 centimetre repeat. It sits between the collection's larger florals and its smaller geometrics in scale, which makes it an easy embroidery to place across a run of curtains without the pattern feeling oversized.

The cloth is 35 per cent linen, 35 per cent viscose and 30 per cent cotton, a three-way blend that gives it body from the linen and cotton with a little added lustre from the viscose thread. It is 128 centimetres wide, with a 38 centimetre vertical and 64 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and upholstery. Three colourways: Indigo, a deep, even blue; Willow, a soft leaf green; and Red/Ivory, a warmer two-tone option. Indigo is the one we reach for most, since it pairs with almost anything else in the room.

We use it for curtains in a bedroom or sitting room, and it upholsters well on an armchair or a pair of dining chairs where the stitch can be appreciated up close. Pair Indigo with a plain linen in blue or grey, Willow with warm timber and cream, and Red/Ivory with a neutral scheme that needs a lift of colour. Allow a full repeat per drop and match the stitch across widths. Line and interline curtains to protect the embroidery from sun and give it body; for upholstery, centre a motif on the main panels and check the pattern falls consistently across a run of dining chairs before cutting the full order.
