GP & J Baker | Elvington

Elvington is another Artisan II weave, built from linen, polyester and viscose into a close, even texture with a 65 by 65 centimetre square repeat. The square repeat gives it a particularly settled, balanced look on a wall of curtain, without the drift towards one direction that a taller or wider repeat can create, and the single deep indigo colourway gives it more presence than the paler weaves elsewhere in the collection.

Composition is 66 per cent linen, 20 per cent polyester and 14 per cent viscose. It is 130 centimetres wide, with a 65 centimetre vertical and 65 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. There is one colourway, Indigo, a deep, ink-toned blue.

We use Elvington for a pair of curtains in a study or bedroom where a strong, dark ground colour is wanted without an obvious pattern. It also works well as a blind in a room with pale walls, where the depth of the indigo does the work, and a run of it along a window seat gives a room real anchor without introducing another pattern to balance. It is a useful cloth for a man's study or a library, where a dark, plain-reading weave suits the books and the timber. Pair it with a warm cream or camel. The square repeat makes matching straightforward; allow one repeat per drop. Line curtains fully, since the dark, dense colourway will show light through an unlined edge more than a paler cloth would. There is no published rub count, so keep this to curtains and blinds rather than upholstery, and order all your cloth from a single batch for a consistent depth of colour.
