GP & J Baker | Farley Stripe

Farley Stripe is a printed stripe from the Cosmopolitan collection, a narrow, even stripe printed on a linen-rich ground rather than woven into it. The 45.5 centimetre horizontal repeat gives the stripe a slow, considered rhythm rather than a tight, formal one, so it reads as relaxed rather than smart in a room. It is the sort of stripe we use to add structure to a scheme without introducing a motif to match against anything else.

The cloth is 65 per cent linen and 35 per cent viscose, which gives the print a soft, absorbed line with a little added drape. It is 136 centimetres wide, with a 15 centimetre vertical and 45.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and upholstery. There is one colourway, Gilt, a warm metallic-toned stripe on a paler ground that catches the light without being a true metallic weave.

We use it for curtains in a room that wants some formality without a heavy pattern, and it upholsters well on a pair of dining chairs or a window seat where the stripe can run vertically. Pair it with a plain linen in one of the stripe's tones, or with a small check for contrast, and keep the rest of the room's pattern to a minimum so the stripe reads cleanly. Stripes need careful matching: keep the stripe running true and level across a run of curtains or a pair of chairs, and agree the direction with your maker before cutting, since a printed stripe can run either up the piece or across it depending on the application. Line curtains as standard, and interline for a south-facing window to protect the printed colour.
