GP & J Baker | Ferns

Ferns is one of GP & J Baker's documentary archive designs, fronds drawn directly from botanical specimens and set out at a modest 53 by 52 centimetre scale on a non-woven base. It is a design the house has kept in print for decades, and the drawing has the precision of a natural history plate rather than a stylised repeat, each frond distinct enough to read as a specimen rather than a generic leaf shape.

The paper is a 100 per cent non-woven base, 52 centimetres wide, with a 53 centimetre vertical and 52 centimetre horizontal repeat. There are eight colourways in all; Original Green, Dove Grey/Silver, Indigo/Teal and Coral/Charcoal are among the most useful, running from a true botanical green through cooler greys and blues to a warmer, more autumnal pairing, so there is a version for almost any scheme.

We would hang Ferns in a hallway, a cloakroom or a study, rooms where a quiet, all-over botanical earns its place without needing to be matched to a large piece of furniture, and it is equally at home as a full room or a single papered alcove. Keep fabrics plain and let the fern take the pattern role. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room, since the eight colourways read quite differently under artificial light.

Match the fronds at each seam so the fern pattern continues without an obvious jump; with a 53 centimetre repeat, allow a little extra for cutting losses.
