GP & J Baker | Floral Trail

Floral Trail is a winding botanical embroidery of flowers and leaves stitched in two colours across a linen-cotton ground. The trail is continuous and open, so the natural ground shows through and the design reads as a drawing in thread rather than a solid pattern. A 38 centimetre vertical repeat keeps it at a friendly scale for bedrooms and small sitting rooms, and the two colours give it a little more life than a tonal embroidery. It suits a room that wants pattern without weight.

The composition is 36 per cent linen, 34 per cent cotton and 30 per cent viscose, the viscose being the embroidery thread. It is 134 centimetres wide with a 38 centimetre vertical and 67 centimetre horizontal repeat, and it is specified for curtains and bedspreads. One colourway, Pink/Green, a soft rose with a leaf green on natural, which suits a bedroom or a garden room. The same trail is available in a single colour on a plainer linen as Floral Trail Linen.

We use it for curtains and a matching bedspread in a guest bedroom, for a roman blind in a bathroom, and for cushions on a cream sofa. Pair with plain linens in either colour and Aylsham on a chair seat cushion. In a cottage it makes a good pair of short curtains on a small window, where the repeat fits well. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Match the trail across widths so it runs unbroken; allow one repeat per drop. Line and interline curtains, and ask your maker to press from the reverse over a soft cloth so the stitching keeps its relief. It is not rated for seating. A blind wants a firm lining so the trail reads crisply when it is down.
