Flower Patch is a small printed cotton, clusters of little flowers set in a close, even repeat across a plain ground. It is drawn simply, with the ink slightly broken at the edges so it looks block-printed rather than machine-perfect. At this scale a print behaves like a texture, and that is exactly what makes GP & J Baker's House Small Prints book so useful in practice.
One hundred per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, repeating 14 centimetres vertically and 13.5 centimetres horizontally, which is small enough that placement rarely costs anything. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Three colourways: Blue, Aqua and Green. Blue is the most useful in a bedroom, Aqua is fresher and suits a bathroom, and Green sits well with natural timber and rush matting.
We use it for bedroom curtains and blinds, for lampshades, and for loose covers on a small chair or a stool. It is a good cushion cloth beside a larger pattern, and it lines a curtain nicely if you want the print to show on the return. Pair it with a stripe from the Symington book and a plain linen. In a child's room it will happily cover a small chair as well. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Small repeats keep wastage low: allow one repeat per drop and match the rows at the seams. On a set of seat pads or lampshades, cut from the same length so the flowers sit in the same position on each. Cotton prints hem crisply, and a full-length curtain should be interlined so the light does not flatten the colour.
