GP & J Baker | Fritillerie

Fritillerie is a documentary print from Originals V, GP & J Baker's collection of reissued archive designs, taking its name and motif from the fritillary, a chequered wildflower long used in English textile prints. The design is set out in a compact 34 by 33 centimetre repeat, giving it a scattered, all-over quality rather than a single dominant motif, with the kind of naturalistic detail that marks it as a documentary reissue rather than a new print.

The cloth is 85 per cent viscose and 15 per cent linen, and it is 137 centimetres wide, with a 34 centimetre vertical and 33 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 45,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains. GP & J Baker specify it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are two colourways: Aqua, a cool, watery blue-green, and Warm Grey, a softer, more neutral reading of the same archive design.

We use it for curtains in a room that wants a smaller-scale archive print rather than a bold statement design, and the Martindale rating means it also covers a chair or a section of a sofa. Aqua suits a fresher, more contemporary room; Warm Grey is the easier choice against a wider range of wall colours and other fabrics. Pair it with a plain linen in a matching tone, or with a bolder archive print such as Pumpkins for a layered, collected scheme. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see the scale and colour in your own light.

Allow one full repeat per drop and match carefully across widths, though the compact, scattered repeat makes pattern matching more forgiving than a large-scale design. Line and interline curtains, and press from the reverse to protect the print.
