GP & J Baker | Fritillerie Cotton

Fritillerie Cotton takes the fritillary, the chequered spring flower, as its subject for GP & J Baker's Originals Brantwood collection, the archive of naturalist studies named for Ruskin's house Brantwood on Coniston Water in the Lake District. The design is printed at a neat, even scale, 33 by 34 centimetres, on a pure cotton ground, so the flower reads as a considered botanical study rather than a busy repeat, close in spirit to the plant studies Ruskin himself made.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, with a 33 centimetre vertical and 34 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 20,000 Martindale rubs, a figure that suits curtains and occasional-use pieces rather than a daily-use sofa, specifying it for curtains and upholstery. Two colourways, Coral and Green; Coral is the warmer, more decorative choice, Green the more grounded, archive-appropriate one that sits well against oak and stone.

We use it for curtains in a bedroom or garden room, where the fritillary's spring character sits naturally, and it covers a lightly used chair or window seat well. The same design is also printed onto a softer viscose-linen ground and, in a different colourway, onto cotton velvet, so the print can move between windows and upholstery in one scheme without introducing a second pattern. Allow a full repeat per drop and match the print across widths so the flower continues cleanly at the seams at every join. Line curtains as standard, and interline for a south-facing window to protect the printed colour from fading; at 20,000 rubs, keep upholstered pieces to lighter, occasional use rather than a hard-working family sofa.
