Front Row is one of the drawn designs Kit Kemp has made for GP & J Baker, and it has the same hand-worked quality as the rest of her papers: a crowded, observed scene rather than a tidy motif. The repeat is 99.5 centimetres, long enough for the drawing to develop properly up a wall and short enough that it still behaves as a pattern rather than a mural. The drawing is dense and the ground barely shows, so the paper behaves as a solid colour at distance and only resolves into figures once you are close enough to read it.
It is a 100 per cent non-woven paper, 70 centimetres wide, with a 99.5 centimetre vertical repeat. There are two colourways, Jewel Blue and Jewel Green, and they are both saturated: the blue is cooler and holds together better in a north-facing room, the green warms up under lamplight and suits a space that is used mostly in the evening. Neither is a background paper, so choose the room before you choose the colour.
This belongs in a small room you are happy to commit, a cloakroom, a snug, a study with one window, papered on every wall so the design has somewhere to go. Against it we would use plain upholstery, a dark painted skirting and simple curtains in a single tone lifted from the drawing. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Paste the wall, not the paper. Allow a full extra repeat on each drop: at a 2.5 metre ceiling a 10 metre roll gives three drops, so a 4 metre wall needs two rolls and a small cloakroom will usually take four. Check the match printed on the roll label before the first length goes up, and keep all rolls from one batch.
