GP & J Baker | Garden Tapestry

Garden Tapestry is the woven cloth in Royal Court, GP & J Baker's collection drawn from the archive of designs made for royal residences. Where most of the range is printed, this one is worked on the loom, so the foliage is built from the structure of the cloth rather than laid on top of it. The result has real depth and a slightly ribbed hand, and the colour shifts as the light moves across it. The repeat is 33 centimetres vertically by 34.25 horizontally, which is a workable scale for furniture as well as windows.

Composition is 79 per cent viscose and 21 per cent polyester, 137 centimetres wide, with a 33 centimetre vertical and 34.25 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is a single colourway, Teal, a deep blue-green that sits between the two and changes character between daylight and lamplight. It is the sort of colour we use as the anchor in a scheme rather than as an accent.

The weave is firm enough for fixed upholstery, and that is how we would use it: a wing chair, a pair of dining chairs, or the seat and back of a window seat. It also makes a substantial curtain with a good weight in the hem. Put it with an oatmeal linen, a plain wool and one small print, and keep the walls quiet. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A woven of this weight wants a deep hem and, on curtains, no interlining or the drop will be stiff. For upholstery, centre the figure on each panel and have your upholsterer railroad nothing, as the design runs up the cloth. Allow one repeat per cut. Trim any cut edges promptly, because a viscose-rich weave frays readily.
