GP & J Baker | Garden Tapestry

Garden Tapestry is the foliate design in Royal Court, GP & J Baker's wallpaper collection drawn from the archive of patterns made for royal residences. Leaves and stems are drawn close together and printed in layered tones, so the wall reads as a dense planted surface rather than as a repeating motif. The vertical repeat is 37.5 centimetres, which is the middle ground in this collection: big enough to have real drawing in it, small enough that a normal room takes several repeats up the wall.

Printed on a 100 per cent non-woven ground, 70 centimetres wide, with a 37.5 centimetre vertical repeat. Three colourways: Royal Green, Soft Blue/Green and Pink/Green. Royal Green is the deepest and turns a small room into something enclosing. Soft Blue/Green is the most usable over a large area and keeps a room light. Pink/Green is the warmest and looks best with plain cream woodwork and a simple linen at the window.

We would use this in a dining room, a cloakroom, a small study or a bedroom where you want the walls to feel planted rather than decorated. It is also good on a chimney breast alone, with the remaining walls painted from the ground colour. Keep pattern elsewhere to a stripe or a plain, and choose curtains in a solid cloth. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.

Paste the wall, hang dry and slide each length to the match. Allow a full repeat per drop for cutting. A four metre wall at 2.6 metres high takes six drops at 70 centimetres wide, which is two to three rolls depending on ceiling height, assuming the usual 10 metre roll. Where the paper meets a corner that is out of true, cut and re-plumb rather than trying to carry the pattern round it.
