GP & J Baker | Glanville

Glanville is an Essential Weaves design with the broadest colour range in this part of the collection, woven from viscose, cotton, linen and polyester with a repeat too fine to register as pattern. It functions as a true house neutral, available in enough tones to run through several rooms of one project without ever quite repeating itself, and at 30,000 rubs it is one of the few plains in the range genuinely tested for upholstery.

Composition is 45 per cent viscose, 35 per cent cotton, 16 per cent linen and 4 per cent polyester. It is 137 centimetres wide, tested to 30,000 rubs on the Martindale, which is rated for upholstery. GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and both loose and fixed upholstery. Five colourways, from a soft Sand through Soft Teal, Indigo and Mineral to Dove; Sand and Dove are the most versatile.

We use Glanville across a whole scheme: a sofa in Dove, curtains in Sand, a chair in Indigo, all from the same base cloth so the room reads as considered rather than assembled. It is equally at home as a single-colour curtain and upholstery pairing in a smaller room, and a window seat in one of the paler tones ties a scheme together without introducing a new colour. Pair with a documentary print for contrast. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

At 30,000 rubs Glanville is rated for upholstery, sitting at the lighter end of that range, so we would keep heavy daily-use pieces to a firmer weight where possible. There is effectively no pattern to match. For curtains, line as usual; for upholstery, ask about railroading given the 137 centimetre width, and order all pieces from one dye lot for consistency across a scheme.
