GP & J Baker | Grand Gertrude

Grand Gertrude is the large-scale version of GP & J Baker's Gertrude design, printed on a viscose and linen ground for the Eldon collection. The drawing is botanical and generous, with stems and blooms worked at a size that reads properly from across a room. Printed rather than woven, the line stays fine and the ground keeps its natural colour behind it.

The cloth is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen, 137 centimetres wide, with a 98 centimetre vertical and 45.5 centimetre horizontal repeat. Abrasion is tested at 20,000 rubs on the Martindale scale. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. It comes in a single colourway, Linen, which prints the design tonally on its own ground so the pattern is all scale and no colour contrast.

A one-colour large floral is unusually useful. We would make it up as full-length interlined curtains in a drawing room, as a loose cover on a deep armchair, or as a bed valance and headboard together. Because it is tonal it will live with a patterned rug or a strong wall colour. We have also used a design like this flat on a headboard with the pattern running horizontally, which suits a low bed and stops the repeat being cut through by the mattress. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With a 98 centimetre vertical repeat, allow one full repeat per drop and expect meaningful cutting waste on a short window, because it is a cloth that suits tall drops better than sills. Three repeats fall across the 137 centimetre width, so seams can be planned between stems. Centre the design on each curtain and on the inside back of any chair.
