Halki Stripe is a woven cotton stripe from GP & J Baker's Eldon collection, with the bands running the length of the cloth and no vertical repeat at all. The colour is in the yarn, so the stripe has depth and a slightly softened edge where the warps meet, and the surface is matt. It is a straightforward, hard-working cloth with a firm, dry handle. Woven stripes of this kind wear better than printed ones because there is no surface layer to rub away, which matters on the front edge of a seat cushion.
It is 100 per cent cotton, 134 centimetres wide, with a 26.8 centimetre horizontal repeat and no vertical repeat. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Four colourways: Teal/Ochre, Blue, Emerald/Blue and Jazz. Blue is the plainest and the easiest to build on; Teal/Ochre and Emerald/Blue each set one colour against another; Jazz runs the widest range of colour through the bands.
We use stripes of this width for curtains, where the vertical bands give a window height, and for loose covers on a sofa where a single stripe can run down the front of each cushion. It also makes a good blind in a room that already has a floral. In Blue it will pass as a plain from any distance, which is often exactly what a scheme needs. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
With no vertical repeat there is nothing to match down the drop, so waste is low and pairs are easy, and you simply start both curtains on the same band. The cloth railroads well, which means a headboard or a long bench cushion can be cut in one piece with the stripe running horizontally. Place seams in the darkest band.
