GP & J Baker | Heath Sprig

Heath Sprig is a small botanical print from the Oleander collection, a single sprig printed at a neat, near-square 32 by 32 centimetre scale on a linen-rich ground that also carries a touch of cotton and polyester in the print. It is a modest, all-over pattern rather than a statement floral, close in spirit to the small sprig prints GP & J Baker has produced across its wider archive.

The cloth is 85 per cent linen, 10 per cent polyester and 5 per cent cotton, a blend that keeps the linen's natural hand while adding a little more definition to the printed line. It is 135 centimetres wide, with a 32 centimetre vertical and 32 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. There is one colourway, Ivory, a soft, warm neutral that reads as quiet rather than stark against most walls.

We use it for curtains in a bedroom or sitting room that wants texture without much colour, and it makes a good roman blind where the small, near-square repeat can sit centred and level. Pair it with a plain linen or wool in a soft neutral, and let a bolder print or a plain velvet carry the colour elsewhere in the room. Allow a full repeat per drop and match the print across widths, since the small, even scale shows any drift at the seams quite readily. Line curtains as standard, and interline for a south-facing window to protect the printed colour from fading; it is specified for curtains rather than upholstery, so keep it off seating and save it for windows instead.
