Henley is a small woven figure in linen and cotton, a neat repeating motif built into the cloth and close enough in scale to read as texture from across a room. The linen keeps the surface dry and slightly uneven, while the cotton gives the weave its definition. It is the sort of cloth we specify when a scheme needs pattern that will not compete with anything else in the room.
Sixty per cent linen with 40 per cent cotton, woven 140 centimetres wide, which is a generous width, with a repeat of 18 centimetres vertically and 23.5 centimetres horizontally. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads, so it will take everyday use. Three colourways: Red/Green, Blue and Aqua. Blue is the easiest to place, and Red/Green has more warmth and works with the printed florals in the same collection.
We use it for dining chairs and loose covers, for cushions, and for curtains in a study or a small bedroom. It is also a good choice for the seat of a window bench, where a weave wears better than a print. Pair it with a large Canton print and a plain linen. The 140 centimetre width often saves a join on a standard window, so measure before assuming three widths. Match the motif across seams and centre it on seat pads so a set of chairs looks considered. As with most linen-rich weaves, let the cloth relax before cutting and upholster on the straight grain.
