Hyde is a small-figured woven texture, a 3 by 3.5 centimetre repeat that gives the surface a fine, regular movement without ever becoming a pattern you have to plan a room around. The hand is soft and dry, with enough body to sit up on a tailored seat cushion, and the weave breaks the colour just enough to keep a large expanse of it interesting rather than heavy.
Composition is 45 per cent viscose, 28 per cent cotton, 21 per cent linen and 6 per cent polyester, woven 137 centimetres wide, with a Martindale figure of 30,000 rubs covering curtains, loose covers, fixed upholstery and bedspreads. The colourway is Soft Red, a warm brick tone with brown in it rather than pink, which behaves well against dark timber and looks better by lamplight than most reds manage to.
We would use Hyde on a pair of occasional chairs, on a long window seat cushion, or as curtains in a dining room where you want the walls to feel warmer after dark. It is a good foil for stone, oatmeal and faded blue, and it takes a contrast piping in cream or dark brown well. In a study it makes a quiet alternative to leather on a desk chair. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
The repeat is small, so for most jobs you can cost it as a plain and add half a metre of working allowance. Do mark the top of each panel before cutting, as the texture is directional and a reversed inside back will read half a shade darker than the seat. If you are piping, cut the strips on the cross so that the texture does not stripe along the edge.
